Konstrukcja there is/there are wprowadza do zdania nową informację o tym, co się znajduje w danym miejscu:

 

There is a big table in our kitchen.

There are 13 girls and 12 boys in my class.

 

Wyrażenie rzeczownikowe, które następuje po konstrukcji there is/there are nie może być poprzedzone przedimkiem określonym the, a jedynie przedimkiem nieokreślonym a/an lub określeniem ilości:

 

There's a computer on my desk.

There are some books on the shelf.

 

Rzeczownik z przedimkiem określonym the odnosi się informacji już znanej i zwykle pojawia się w zdaniu w funkcji podmiotu:

 

The computer is on my desk.

The books are on the shelf.

 

 

FORMA

 

There is używamy z wyrażeniem rzeczownikowym w liczbie pojedynczej, natomiast there are – w liczbie mnogiej.
