Brak przedimka – rozszerzenie

 

AT SCHOOL, HOSPITAL...

 

School, hospital, a także inne rzeczowniki tej grupy, np. prison, bed, college, jail, church mogą zostać użyte z the lub bez żadnego przedimka w zależności od kontekstu.

 

Przedimka nie użyjemy, jeśli mowa jest o konkretnym przeznaczeniu danego obiektu/miejsca. To znaczy jeśli:

 

we go to school                                                     as a pupil

we go to college                                  as a student

we go to hospital                                as a patient

we go to bed                                         to sleep

we go to prison/jail                         as a prisoner

we go to church                                   to pray or for a service

 

Jeśli rzeczowniki te zostaną użyte w innym kontekście, wówczas konieczne jest postawienie przedimka:

 

Twenty prisoners escaped last night but they were caught and the prison is now under control.

The church is hundreds of years old.

She sat on the bed and looked at me.
